Mission & Vision

The mission of PREPARE Portland is to build and sustain the highest level of safety in our community through top-quality IMPACT training in awareness, personal safety, violence and assault prevention, and self-defense skills.

Our vision is that all members of our diverse community will have the skills and confidence to keep themselves and each other safe from violence.  PREPARE Portland, schools, universities, organizations, agencies, businesses, and individuals will collaborate and cooperate

Our instructors are women and men working together to prevent violence and to promote peace and healthy relationships.  They teach safety concepts, awareness, boundary-setting, and full-force physical defense skills to students of all ages and have each gone through over 100 hours of training to become certified IMPACT instructors.  

These are qualities we seek when choosing instructors:

  • Emotional intelligence
  • Ability to set and maintain healthy boundaries
  • Excellent communication

Lia Nagase is the Director as well as an instructor.  After taking her first IMPACT class in California, Lia knew she had found a calling.  She immediately took every advanced class the organization offered, began fundraising and volunteering, and eventually worked in their office. Growing up in Oakland, California brought about passion and dedication to justice and equity. Lia moved to Portland in 2006 with the intention of bringing IMPACT to the greater Portland community and cofounded
